ALOHA!

  HULA KAHIKO

Hula Kahiko, or Ancient Hula, is the dance of Old Hawai`i, when there were no slack key guitars or `ukuleles.  Instead, they danced to ho`opa`a  (chanters) who used the shark-skinned pahu drum or the double gourds known as the ipu heke.

Dances were not for entertainment, but rather to appease the gods and goddesses of Hawai`i so that they would have a good harvest – or in honour of the reigning king and queen, or their strong warriors or chiefs.  This was the hula of ancient Hawai`i – the Hula Kahiko.
